As much as I try to set aside all the anticipation-related emotions and see this album as just a new release, it’s simply not feasible. It’s fuckin’ MORCHEEBA, the legend, the beacon in this very rift we are trippin’. The band I never gave up on, and the band that never did give up (even though Dive Deep did sound a bit desperate). This is why I’m sure that Blood Like Lemonade will be listened to by many and will be liked by quite a few. Despite all its flaws. Wah-wah-waahhh. Yeah, call me a douche bag  and a nitpickin’ asshole, but this is my humblest of all opinions – the new Morcheeba release is a bit bland. Even with Skye. Even with vampires and vikings. The latter don’t actually do the album any favors. The title track does tell an elaborate story (and kinda makes me want to do some research on the subject and find out who exactly are they talkin’ about; but I’m way too lazy to do that), but seems overworked and distracts from the music. Vikings, on the other hand, are as hilarious as you think they would be in a Morcheeba song. Don’t know about you, but when I hear “to the beat of the drum… singing our song and feeling strong”, it just cracks me up. There are also a couple of those weird harmonica vs. turntables instrumentals, which would have been nice interludes in-between the chapters, if the story would have been just a tad longer. But at 10 tracks, Blood Like Lemonade leaves you thirsty. For more Skye, who is magnificent and does an impeccable job, for more adventure in beat, rhythm and melody, for more… fun. Some tracks do deliver all of the above. “Even Though” is a chillout perfection and by itself is making the reform worthwhile. “Recipe For Disaster” rhymes “killer-mirror” and “faster-disaster” and I caught myself singing along before it even went into chorus. All in all, Blood Like Lemonade is a pleasant record, with catchy melodies, great vocals, polished instrumentations and entertaining lyrics. But it’s still pretty damn far from the epic Big Calm, glorious Fragments Of Freedom, or even bitterly ironic The Antidote.

On the roadside by the wreckage
With my head in my hands
Wish I’d never got your message
Felt too late to change your plans

I can smell the Goodyears burning
And it won’t fade away
Windscreen broken, you’re bleeding
Rolling action replay

Hell bound, hopeless for you
Nothing left to hold on to
Hell bound, helpless, it’s true
It’s crimson crystal view

There’s wild berries in the hedgegrow
All I need is a drink
Got to soothe my shattered senses
Please forgive me, time to think

Down the dusty trails of treason
Lies a dangerous game, there’s a danger
Sunshine suicide survivor
Wasted angel, numb with pain, so wasted

Hell bound, hopeless for you
Nothing left to hold on to
Hell bound, helpless, it’s true
It’s crimson crystal view

Hell bound, hopeless for you
Nothing left to hold on to
Hell bound, helpless, it’s true
It’s crimson crystal view

Hell bound, hopeless for you
Hell bound, hopeless for you
Hell bound, hopeless for you
Hell bound, hopeless for you

Constant drifting space no fear by a pepper moon
look at all the waves down here did we peak too soon
all the deadly dreams we had that i cant believe
the universal messages that we don’t receive

even though we know its forever changing
even though we know we lie and wait
even though we know the hidden danger
i hope its not too late

slowly follow shining stars for the solar flare
im on borrowed time right now running low on air
its a pity you cant see such a travesty
gonna give myself to the deep majesty

even though we know its forever changing
even though we know we lie and wait
even though we know the hidden danger
i hope its not too late

la na na naa
la na na ne naa
la la na naa na naa

even though we know its forever changing
even though we know we lie and wait
even though we know the hidden danger
i hope its not too late

even though we know its forever changing
even though we know we lie and wait
even though we know the hidden danger
i hope its not too late

Healing holy man, once upon a time
Heal it for his wife up until the crime

Hunting high and low to seek revenge
Brand new moral code, got made reluctant renegade
Leaving empty souls when he avenged
Evil spirits flowed he drank the blood like lemonade

Cozy campfire crowd with a case of wine
Im feeling fine
Bounty hunter now and it crossed the line
Cross that line

Hunting high and low to seek revenge
Brand new moral code got made reluctant renegade
Leaving empty souls when he avenged
Evil spirits flowed he drank the blood like lemonade

In the border town down in Mexico
They let him go
Lore and order now ’cause he runs the show
So now you know

Hunting high and low, exact revenge
Brand new moral code got made reluctant renegade
Leaving empty souls when he avenged
Evil spirits flow he drank the blood like lemonade
(repeat x2)

He drank the blood like lemonade (x3)

(the horrifyingly incomplete text, the only one I could find, and then I added some lines myself)

Wanna know why there’s a dead guy in my dining room.
Hit a dead end with my best friend, met his end too soon.
Cold-blooded killer in the mirror.
I don’t recognize.
Caught and convicted, TV-depicted right before your eyes.
But it’s over, I’m telling you now
Oh no, no more

Oh, I never felt my heart beat faster
Oh, it’s a recipe for disaster
Oh, I never felt my heart beat faster
Oh, it’s a recipe for disaster

Early evening, wine was breathing, things were going well.
Took a good look at the cookbook
Found a perfect spell
My preparation, anticipation
(…something-something…) in suspense
Intoxicated, he turned out wasted
And I took offense
But it’s over, I’m telling you now
Oh no, no more

Oh, I never felt my heart beat faster
Oh, it’s a recipe for disaster
Oh, I never felt my heart beat faster
Oh, it’s a recipe for disaster

Oh, there was (…something…) in the final chapter

Love.
